DMX over LAN

The PETAL brain can operate in a "standalone" mode, with effects selected and customized through the WLED browser app running on the onboard ESP32 microcontroller. While this mode is simple and convenient, most will find this control method limiting for two key reasons:

  1. WLED lacks a timeline view and offers no advanced tools for creating or previewing dynamic scenes.
  2. There isn't any good way to use WLED to drive traditional DMX fixtures.

If you find these limitations unacceptable, you will want to drive your PETAL brain using DMX over LAN. This setup delegates pixel mapping to your computer or lighting console, while the ESP32 handles data reformatting and distribution. To do this:

  1. Connect your PETAL controller and computer (or console) to the same local network. It is recommended to do this using a hardline (ethernet cable)
  2. Install a DMX-over-Ethernet-compatible tool (e.g., Show Buddy, Touchdesigner, xLights, QLC+, or a lighting console supporting Artnet or E1.31/sACN).
  3. Configure your software to send Artnet or E1.31 (sACN) data to the PETAL controller.
  4. On the WLED app, go to Config Sync Interfaces ► DMX and enable E1.31 support. Set the start universe and channel mapping as needed.
  5. Test communication by sending a simple effect or scene from your DMX software to ensure the brain responds correctly.
